The Chandi Studio is located in a great spot in downtown Boise, just across from the university and right near the Greenbelt where many of us walk or run after work. We have amazing neighbors that surround us – one of them being the Boise Bicycle Project (www.boisebicycleproject.org). When I moved to Boise last summer, my son Zane and I picked up some bicycle rims in the alley by our house, determined to finally start our long-planned line of lighting out of recycled, found parts. I talked about the concept with Jeff Hartmann of Anarchy Metal (who I have been so fortunate to be working with on my frames), and Jeff and I started letting the idea marinate. So when last month Jeff said he wanted to make a chandelier for BBP, I was so ready to go! Jeff has worked with BBP for a while now and recognizes what an incredible contribution they make to our community. When I learned that BBP was raising money to buy their building, the proverbial wheels started turning. Instead of just one, why not create a series of pieces to be auctioned that might help bring attention to the BBP Biking For the Building campaign and raise some money for them? Jeff told friend and GM of the Boise Fry Company(www.boisefrycompany.com), Ryan Reinke, what we were doing and Ryan offered his own time, efforts, and ideas to take it up a notch and place the chandeliers in restaurants around town for display. Then Boise developer and BBP supporter, David Hale, caught wind of it and offered space in the Linen Building Gallery (www.thelinenbuilding.com) to showcase the pieces before their installation around town.
So now what? Now I’ve got to sign off and get busy! Check back for new photos as the collection grows and news as the project progresses. I am excited to be a part of this! The enthusiam with which this project has been met is a true testament to the amazing community that is Boise!
The Chandi bicycle series will be on display during the Modern Art event, May 5 at the Linen Building Gallery 1402 Grove Street Boise, Idaho 83702

Our event at the Linen Building Gallery last Thursday had such an amazing turnout! Thank you to all who came down to show your support and take a closer look at these pieces. My favorite thing about creating is getting to witness the response of others to the work. The smiles and joy that people experience is the reason I do what I do. Thank you again to David Hale for providing the space and to Fulcrum Design for the print work(www.fulcrumdesign.net), to Jeff Hartmann, my amazing partner and interpreter of my hand motions in this project…”You know, like THIS!”, and to Dave Zablocki, my right hand in all things electrical who deserves credit for seamlessly incorporating the mechanics of actually illuminating these sculptures. We’ll keep you posted about the June auction and look for more photos coming as new pieces emerge!
